Barracuda Come Up Empty In 3-0 Loss In Ontario

ONTARIO, CA –The San Jose Barracuda (2-3-0-1, 5pts) presented by Barracuda Networks dropped their third straight game after a 3-0 loss to the host Ontario Reign (5-0-0-0, 10pts) in front of 8,285 fans at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on Saturday evening.  The Barracuda are back in action on Sunday, November 1 at 3pm vs. the Reign at the SAP Center.

Ontario netminder Peter Budaj picked up his third shutout of the season with 24 saves as the Barracuda have now been shutout in eight consecutive periods.  Andrew Crensenzi’s goal just 67 seconds into the contest stood tall but the Reign added insurance goals by Adrian Kempe and Michael Mersch in the third period for the home victory.

Andrew Crescenzi (1st ) scored the only goal of the first period as he was able to sweep in a loose puck rebound that got behind goaltender Troy Grosenick at 1:07.  Gus Young (1st FM) and Ryan Horvat (3rd FM) dropped the mitts at 17:49 to close out a rather chippy opening frame.  Ontario held a 12-5 shot advantage into the first intermission.

Aaron Dell replaced goaltender Troy Grosenick at the start of the second period as Grosenick was shaken up late in the first period after some contact in the crease by Jordan Samuels-Thomas.  San Jose outshot Ontario 10-9 in the second period but netminders Aaron Dell and Peter Budaj stood tall as Ontario took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

The Reign added a pair of insurance goals in the third period by rookie Adrian Kempe (1st) on the power play at 4:12 and an empty net tally by Michael Mersch (4th) at 19:14 to seal the 3-0 game.  San Jose fired nine more shots in the third period but Peter Budaj stood tall for his 5th consecutive victory to start the season.

Notes: Three Stars: 3rd star: Adrian Kempe (1-0-1) 2nd star: Andrew Crescenzi (1-0-1) 1st star: Peter Budaj (24 Saves)… Final shots were 28-24 in favor of Ontario… Peter Budaj (5-0-0) made 24 saves on 24 shots for Ontario … Troy Grosenick (0-2-1) made 11 saves on 12 shots for San Jose in 20 minutes of play before Aaron Dell made 14 saves on 15 shots in the final 40 minutes… San Jose went 0-for-5 on the power play while Ontario went 1-for-4… Patrick McNally and Melker Karlsson (day-to-day) did not dress for the Barracuda… Captain Bryan Lerg is still on recall with the SJ Sharks… Before the game forward John McCarthy was recalled by the San Jose Sharks… Dylan DeMelo, Karl Stollery, and Micheal Haley wore the alternate captain “A’s” on their jerseys… San Jose has not scored in 166:20 of play… Julius Bergman had a team high four shots on goal for the Barracuda.
