Barracuda fall to Gulls in Overtime

Barracuda Drop 3-2 Overtime Decision in San Diego

Dec 18, 2015

San Diego, CA –The San Jose Barracuda (9-9-2-3, 23pts) presented by Barracuda Networks dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the host San Diego Gulls (13-10-0-1, 27pts) in front of 9,421 fans at the Valley View Casino Arena on Friday evening.  The Barracuda host the Stockton Heat on Sunday, Dec 20 at 3pm before enjoying a five day holiday break.

Karl Stollery and Nikolay Goldobin scored for the Barracuda while Troy Grosenick made 28 saves in net in the overtime loss as San Jose dropped their third straight game (0-1-2-0).  Stefan Noesen scored twice for the Gulls, including the game winner in overtime as Anton Khudobin made 30 saves in his first AHL start of the season as San Diego won their 8th home game of the season.

Neither team scored in the first period as San Jose outshot San Diego 12-10 through 20 minutes of play.  Alex Gallant (2nd FM) dropped Stu Bickel (8th FM) with a series of rights in a terrific fight at 6:21 of the opening period.  A few thousand teddy bears were tossed onto the ice after the Gulls thought they had scored as the period came to an end but after video review it was ruled time expired before the puck entered the cage behind Troy Grosenick.

Karl Stollery (2nd) gave the Barracuda a 1-0 advantage with a quick snap shot from in between the circles past the glove of goaltender Anton Khudobin to finish off a nice 3-on-2 rush at 7:51 of the second period.  But San Jose began a parade to the penalty box and the AHL’s best power play struck twice as defenseman Shea Theodore (4th) fired a shot from the point at 15:26 and Stefan Noesen (2nd) knocked home a rebound on top of the crease at 17:54 as the Gulls grabbed a 2-1 advantage through 40 minutes of play.

Troy Grosenick made some big saves early in the third period to keep the Barracuda down by just a single score.  San Jose would tie the score after Petter Emanuelsson sent a wing to wing pass to the left side and Nikolay Goldobin (5th) buried home the tying score at 12:16 for the only score of the third period.  Shots were 11-8 San Diego in the third period as the two clubs headed to overtime tied at 2-2.

The Gulls won the game in overtime after a great end to end rush by rookie defenseman Brandon Montour who led fed a terrific pass across the crease to Stefan Noesen (3rd) at 3:11 for the game winner.
