Barracuda Get Rumpel First AHL Win

Barracuda Earn Weekend Split After Late Game Winner By McCarthy

Mar 6, 2016

San Jose, CA – Petter Emanuelsson scored twice to lead the San Jose Barracuda (25-19-6-3, 59pts) presented by Barracuda Networks over the visiting Bakersfield Condors (25-22-3-2, 55pts) by the score of 4-3 in front of 4,051 fans at SAP Center on Sunday afternoon.

Rookie goaltender Joel Rumpel made 24 saves in his AHL debut for the Barracuda while Petter Emanuelsson scored twice and John McCarthy broke a 2-2 tie late in the third period as San Jose earned a weekend spit with Bakersfield.  The two teams combined for 18 penalties in a feisty affair that featured two teams battling for the 4th and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division.

A chippy first period saw seven penalties dished out which included fighting majors to Gus Young and Kale Kessy at 12:04.  The Barracuda scored first as Petter Emanuelsson (7th) intercepted a clearing attempt and then sent a quick shot past goalie Eetu Laurikainen at 7:10.  Bakersfield tied the score on a fluke one as a shot from the point went wide and bounced off the end wall and off of Mitch Moroz (3rd) and past netminder Joe Rumpel at 11:44.  Bakersfield had a goal waved off at 17:06 due to goalie interference as the Barracuda outshot the Condors 14-10
in the opening period.

Seven more penalties were whistled in the second period as each team found the back of the net once more.  Petter Emanuelsson (8th) finished off a 3-on-2 rush racing down the middle of the ice and buried his second of the game after a great feed by Ryan Carpenter at 8:47.  The Condors tied the score again after J.J. Khaira (9th) struck shorthanded at 11:21.  Each team had 12 shots on goal in the middle frame and the Barracuda were 0-6 on the power play through 40 minutes of play.

Veteran John McCarthy (12th) broke a 2-2 tie at 15:41 of the third period for the game winner with a shot that broke through the Condors goal Laurikainen.  Joel Rumpel made four more saves in the final frame and Jeremy Morin (12th) finished the game with an empty netter score at 19:54 to give San Jose the 4-3 win.
