SAN JOSE, CALIF. - The San Jose Barracuda (42-14-2-5) scored three unanswered goals in the third period to top the Ontario Reign (33-20-10-0), 5-1, on Wednesday night at SAP Center.
Troy Grosenick (29-9-3) made 23 saves to earn his 29th win, and San Jose beat Jeff Zatkoff (1-3-1) five times on 38 shots.
In the first, San Jose outshot Ontario 16-to-9 but failed to find the back of the net despite going on the power play three times. Tempers flared between the two rivals at 17:02 when heavy weights Zack Stortini and Paul Bissonnette dropped the mitts.
In the second, Timo Meier (13, 14) broke the deadlock as he fired a sharp-angle shot from along the left wall at 9:52 and then netted his second of the game when Danny O'Regan found the former first rounder uncovered atop the crease at 16:32.
In the final frame, Ontario's T.J. Hensick (16) cut San Jose's lead down to one at 7:08 on the power play, but San Jose took control of the game with three unanswered tallies to claim the 5-1 win. First, Tim Heed (14) blasted a slap shot past Zatkoff from the left point, then Buddy Robinson (15) went forehand-to-backhand on a breakaway, and Adam Helewka (13) snapped a 19-game goalless drought by chipping a Rourke Chartier two-one-pass top shelf.
