BARRACUDA LOSE 5-1 IN SAN DIEGO

Jan 20, 2017

San Diego, CA - The San Jose Barracuda (19-10-1-3) allowed a pair of opening period goals on Friday, and the San Diego Gulls (18-12-2-1) rode the early momentum to a 5-1 win in front of 12,920 fans at a sold out Valley View Casino Center.

Jordan Samuels-Thomas (5) waited just one minute and 52 seconds to give San Diego the opening period lead as he collected a loose puck below the left circle and turned and fired a shot over Troy Grosenick's left shoulder. After San Jose had killed off the only power play of the period, the Gulls extended their lead to 2-0 as Scott Sabourin (3) received a no look tape-to-tape pass from Tyler Morley and chipped the shot just under the crossbar at 19:39 of the first.

In the second, San Diego held the Barracuda to just three shots and pushed their lead to 3-0 on the power play as Nick Sorensen (5) beat Grosenick with a shot from the low slot at 14:17.

Kalle Kossila (8) made it 4-0 Gulls in the third with a lacrosse-style goal from below the goal line at 12:15. Patrick McNally (2) broke up Jhonas Enroth's shutout bid with a slap shot that went through the net. Play continued, but the goal was rewarded following a review at 13:37. Kossila (9) was credited with an empty-net goal at 17:09 after John McCarthy hooked the Gull' forward on a breakaway.

Enroth (2-0-0) earned his second win as a Gull' after stopping 30 of 31 shots, while Grosenick (9-8-2) suffered the loss after allowing four goals on 34 shots.
