SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The San Jose Barracuda (38-14-2-4) outshot the San Diego Gulls (38-15-3-2) 37-to-27 on Wednesday night but fell 5-1 at Valley Casino Center.
San Diego put nine shots on net before San Jose registered one and on their tenth Brian Cooper (3) beat Troy Grosenick through the five-hole from the left point at 10:53. San Jose stormed back and ended the period down 13-to-14 in shots but couldn't tie the score.
In the second, the Gulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a pair of tallies from Shea Theodore (4, 5). First, Theodore collected a pass in the high slot on the power play and fired a wrister inside the left post at 3:53. One minute and 30 seconds later, Theodore forced a Barracuda turnover in the o-zone and beat Grosenick from the left wing at 5:27. San Jose outshot the Gulls 16-to-5 but failed to cut into San Diego's lead.
Tim Heed (13) finally got the Barracuda on the board on the power play to make it 3-1 at 3:27 of the third, but the Gulls put the game away when Kevin Roy found Scott Sabourin (6) backdoor at 14:13. Kalle Kossila (12) added an empty-netter at 17:23.
Grosenick suffered his first regulation loss since January 20 after allowing four goals on 22 shots while Tokarski earned the win after making 36 saves on 37 shots.
