Barracuda Win a 4-3 Shootout Thriller in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, CA –The San Jose Barracuda (4-6-0-1, 9pts) presented by Barracuda Networks came from behind to defeat the host San Diego Gulls (9-2-0-1, 19pts) by the score of 4-3 in the shootout in front of 10,010 fans at the Valley View Casino Center on Friday evening.  The two teams clash again in San Diego on Saturday, November 14 at 7:05pm.

Barclay Goodrow and Bryan Lerg scored second period goals for San Jose while Scott Timmins scored with 24 seconds left in the third period to tie the score at 3-3 to force overtime.  Joakim Ryan had an overtime goal waved off, Troy Grosenick stopped a penalty shot in overtime, and Jeremy Langlois scored in the third round of the shootout for the walk-off game winner in a thriller.

The Gulls broke out to a 2-0 first period lead after outshooting San Jose 10-4 through 20 minutes.  Nick Ritchie (9th) gave the Gulls a 1-0 lead after a cross the crease pass was fired home past Troy Grosenick at 1:48.  San Diego struck again on the power play after a shot from the left circle was tipped in front by Chris Mueller (2nd) that trickled past Grosenick at 11:04.  Gus Young (2nd FM) and Joseph Cramarossa (1st FM) engaged in a great scrap at 8:30 in a physical first frame.

San Jose tied the score with a pair of second period goals.  Barclay Goodrow (2nd) got the Barracuda on the board after he drove to the net and flipped a loose puck past goaltender John Gibson at 7:43.  Captain Bryan Lerg (5th) evened the score at 2-2 with a great individual effort on the power play as he cut across the circles and sent a backhander into the net at 11:15.  San Jose outshot San Diego 13-6 in the second period as the two clubs headed into the second intermission tied 2-2.

The Gulls went back ahead 3-2 as Nic Kerdiles struck on the power play at 13:45.  But the Barracuda would tie the score again, this time with the extra attacker.  Scott Timmins (3rd) fired a shot past John Gibson after he was set up by Ryan Carpenter with 24 seconds left in the third period.  Shots were 10-9 San Diego in the third period.

In a wild overtime period, rookie Joakim Ryan thought he scored his first professional goal in the opening minute but the goal was waved off.  Moments later, Troy Grosenick stopped Brandon Montour on a penalty shot at 1:05.  Shots were 4-3 San Diego in a back and forth overtime frame.

Troy Grosenick stopped all three Gulls shooters in the shootout and Jeremy Langlois won the game with a walk-off goal in the third round as San Jose took home the 4-3 victory.

The Barracuda record improves to 4-6-0-1 overall with a 3-2-0-0 record on the road.

Notes: Three Stars: 3rd star: Scott Timmins (1-0-1, +2) 2nd star: Brandon Montour (0-2-2) 1st star: Jeremy Langlois (GWG, 0-2-2, +2)….Final shots were 30-30… John Gibson (7-1-1) made 26 saves on 29 shots for San Diego ….Troy Grosenick (1-3-1) made 27 saves on 30 shots for San Jose ….San Jose went 1-for-5 on the power play while San Jose went 2-for-7… Julius Bergman, Chris Crane, and Frazer McLaren (injured) did not dress for the Barracuda…Micheal Haley, Melker Karlsson, Nikolay Goldobin, and Mirco Mueller are all currently with the SJ Sharks… Bryan Lerg (4-2-6) currently has a five game point streak with a goal… the Barracuda wore their home white jerseys on the road as the Gulls wore their black jerseys…forward Alex Gallant played in his first career AHL game for the Barracuda… forwards Danny Doremus and Greger Hanson each made their SJ Barracuda debuts….the Barracuda have been outscored 7-16 in the 1st period this season….San Jose won the game dispute never having the lead in the hockey game… Jeremy Langlois added two assists and had a game high six shots on goal.
