Tonight’s Matchup: The San Jose Barracuda wrap up the 2019 exhibition schedule on Saturday night with the second of two games against the Colorado Eagles, affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. A season ago, the Barracuda went 4-2-1-1 in eight games against the Eagles and 3-1-0-0 on home ice, including a 9-0 win on March 17, 2019.
About Last Night: Andrew Shortridge made 24 saves and the Barracuda went three-for-five on the power play en-route to 3-0 win over the Eagles. Tryout forward Krystof Hrabik opened up the scoring at the five-minute mark of the first before sophmore forward Maxim Letunov added on to San Jose's lead at 1:25 of the second. In the third, Noah Gregor picked up his second point on his team-leading fourth shot of the game as he ripped home his first of the exhibiton season to give the Barracuda a 3-0 lead at 8:25.
Half Decade: In 2019-20, the Barracuda enter their fifth season playing in San Jose, following the American Hockey League's creation of the Pacific Division, consisting of seven teams - all of whom serve as primary development affiliates for the National Hockey. Many of the players on the Sharks roster made their journey to the National Hockey League by playing and developing in the AHL, including Logan Couture, Brent Burns, Martin Jones, Brenden Dillon, Radim Simek, Timo Meier, Marcus Sorensen, Tim Heed, Kevin Labanc, Barclay Goodrow, Melker Karlsson, Lukas Radil and Aaron Dell. Since joining the Pacific Division for the 2015-16 campaign, the Barracuda are the only team in the division to reach the postseason in each of the first four seasons, including making a Conference Finals appearance in 2017
Welcome Back: The Sharks reassigned nine players to the Barracuda on Wednesday, increasing the Barracuda’s training camp roster to 28 players (four goalies, seven defensemen and 17 forwards). Among the 28 players, 13 return from last year’s squad, including captain John McCarthy, leading scorer Alex True, leading defensive scorer Nick DeSimone and All-Star goaltender Josef Korenar.
Trade Winds: On Friday the Sharks traded goaltender Antoine Bibeau to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for 22-year-old defenseman Nick Meloche. The Avalanche selected Meloche in the second round (40th overall) of the 2015 NHL draft. Over his two-year pro career, the native of LaSalle, Quebec has appeared in 113 AHL games with Colorado and San Antonio, registering 38 points (11 goals, 27 assists), 112 penalty minutes and a minus-19 rating.
New Kids: In 2018-19, the Colorado Eagles became the first Avalanche AHL affiliate to reach the postseason since the Lake Erie Monsters claimed a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs in 2010-11. Prior to joining the AHL in 2018-19, the Eagles had captured back-to-back Kelly Cup championships as members of the ECHL.
