SHARKS RE-SIGN DEFENSEMAN NICK DeSIMONEJul 11, 2019
SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has re-signed defenseman Nick DeSimone (@njdes) to a two-year contract. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Nick continued to improve his overall game last season, finishing in the top-10 in scoring amongst league blueliners and developing into one of the AHL's top two-way defensemen," said Wilson. "His hockey sense and smooth skating have become an asset in both zones and helped propel him to become one of the leaders on what was the youngest team in the league last season. We look forward to watching him take yet another step forward in his development this season."
DeSimone, 24, achieved career-highs in games played (65), goals (14), assists (32), points (46) and penalty minutes (30) during his second full professional season with the San Jose Barracuda (@sjbarracuda) the Sharks' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. He ranked first among Barracuda blueliners in points, assists, goals and power-play goals (5) and ranked tied for sixth in goals, tied for seventh in points, tied for eighth in power-play goals and T-12th in assists among all AHL defensemen. Additionally, he earned his first NHL recall with the Sharks on March 22.
At the conclusion of his collegiate career in 2017, DeSimone joined the Barracuda where he notched his first professional goal and a plus-five rating in four regular season games. He then contributed six points (one goal, five assists) through 13 postseason games as San Jose made its first-ever Western Conference Final appearance during the 2017 Calder Cup Playoffs.
Prior to joining the organization, DeSimone played three seasons with Union College where in his junior year he helped the Dutchmen reach the first round of the NCAA Hockey Championship tournament. During his time with Union, DeSimone produced 48 points (15 goals, 33 assists) and a plus-seven rating in 109 games.
As a junior he was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team (2016-17), and as a freshman he recorded the third-most overall points (11) amongst ECAC rookie defensemen (2014-15).
The six-foot-two, 185-pound native of East Amherst, NY originally signed with the Sharks as an unrestricted free agent on March 30, 2017.
