SHARKS SIGN DEFENSEMAN FREDRIK CLAESSON

SAN JOSE, CA (Jan. 11, 2021) San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed defenseman Fredrik Claesson to a one-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Fredrik is a strong defensive player who has the ability to shut down the opposition quickly,” said Wilson. "His NHL experience provides value to our organization's defensive depth. We are happy to have him."

Claesson, 28, split the 2019-20 season with the New Jersey Devils and Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League (AHL). Claesson appeared in five games for New Jersey, recording two points (one goal, one assist). While with the Checkers, the defenseman registered 19 points (three goals, 16 assists) in 47 contests. He finished second among Checkers defensemen and third on the team in plus/minus (15).

Over the course of his NHL career, Claesson has skated with the Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers and Devils, recording 28 points (seven goals, 21 assists) in 155 career games. In the AHL, he has played with the Binghamton Senators and Charlotte, collecting 89 points (16 goals, 73 assists) along with a +44 rating in 355 games.

Internationally, he represented Sweden at the 2012 World Juniors, appearing in six games and helped his country to a Gold Medal in the tournament. He also participated in the U-18 World Juniors, helping Sweden earn a Silver Medal with one assist in six games.

The six-foot, 201-pound native of Stockholm, Sweden was originally selected by Ottawa in the 2011 NHL Draft (fifth round, 126th overall).
