Sharks Sign Defenseman Jeremy Roy

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed defenseman Jeremy Roy to a standard, entry-level contract.

Roy, 18, collected 43 points (5 goals, 38 assists) in 46 games with the Sherbrooke Phoenix of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) last season, and ranked T-10th amongst all QMJHL defensemen in points despite skating in just 46 games due to injury. His 0.93 points per game ranked 2nd amongst league blueliners (minimum 25 games played) and he led Sherbrooke defensemen in both points and assists. Roy represented the QMJHL at the CHL’s 2015 Top Prospects Game, recording an assist and a plus-1 for Team Orr.

In 2013-14, Roy posted 44 points (14 goals, 30 asissts) in 64 games as a rookie for Sherbrooke, leading all QMJHL rookie defensemen in points, goals and assists. He was awarded the Raymond Lagace Trophy as the QMJHL Defensive Rookie of the Year, and was named to the league’s All-Rookie Team.

Internationally, the defenseman represented Team Canada at the 2015 U-18 World Junior Championships, recording four points (three goals, one assist), en route to a bronze medal and was named one of Canada’s top-three players by his coaches. In 2014, Roy was named an alternate captain for Canada during the Hlinka Memorial Tournament, and posted three assists in five games as Canada won the gold medal. In addition, he posted the most points by a defenseman (5) as Quebec’s captain in the 2014 World U-17 Hockey Challenge.

The six-foot, 185-pound native of Richelieu, Quebec, was originally drafted by San Jose in the second round (31st overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.
