BARRACUDA FALL TO EAGLES IN GAME ONE

May 2, 2025

San Jose, CA – The San Jose Barracuda were defeated by the Colorado Eagles 6-3 in game one of the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs in the American Hockey League Division Semifinals, in front of a sellout crowd at Tech CU Arena in San Jose. This is the first playoff game for the Barracuda at home since 2019 and the first in Tech CU Arena history.

The Barracuda will face the Eagles for game 2 this Sunday at Tech CU Arena in a best-of-five series at 6:00 PM PT.

“Overall, I thought it was a pretty evenly game played,” said San Jose Head Coach John McCarthy.

In the first, the Calle Rosén opened the scoring at 16:16 of the opening period for the Colorado Eagles, beating Yaroslav Askarov. The Barracuda kept the Eagles’ netminder Trent Miner busy, outshooting the visiting team 12-to-6. Barracuda forward Patrick Giles led the team with three shots on goal in the first. The ‘Cuda had never trailed in the first period in the 2024-25 playoffs.

“It’s a long series and that's just game one. We were saying regardless of the score, we are going to play our game and carry that into game two,” said Giles.

During a Donavan Houle double minor high-sticking penalty in the second, Filip Bystedt opened the scoring for the home team by netting an unassisted shorthanded goal, his second marker of the playoffs, beating Miner going five-hole at 8:25 in the second. The Eagles added to their lead with a John Ludvig strike late in the second on a delayed penalty.

“It was unreal. That’s the moment you want to be out there for, get the crowd going, cheer, and score goals, it’s pretty fun,” said Bystedt.

In the third, Collin Graf gave his team a spark by netting his second goal of the playoffs at 13:16 of the third period. Lucas Carlsson was credited the lone assist on Graf’s strike, his first helper in the playoffs. Following Graf, Colin White brought the home team within one with his first-career AHL playoff goal at 17:41 of the third period. Giles was credited with his playoff point, an assist, on White’s strike. Colorado pushed their lead back to three after empty-net goals from Megna, his second goal in the contest, and Tye Felhaber after Askarov was pulled to go on the man advantage. Askarov made his third consecutive start in the playoffs and Danil Gushchin made his Calder Cup Playoffs debut after sitting out the previous two games with an illness.
