Barracuda Open Road Trip In Style In San Diego
Jan 13, 2016San Diego, CA –The San Jose Barracuda (17-10-3-3, 40pts) presented by Barracuda Networks extended their season best point streak to seven games (6-0-1-0) with an exciting 2-1 overtime victory over the host San Diego Gulls (17-14-1-1, 36pts) in front of 6,023 fans at the Valley View Casino Arena on Wednesday evening. The Barracuda’s three game road trip continues on Friday at 5pm (pacific time) in Rockford, IL vs. the IceHogs.
Head coach Roy Sommer picked up win #634, trailing only Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history and goaltender Troy Grosenick (9-4-3) was spectacular in net with 24 saves and a penalty shot stop midway through the third period.
Karl Stollery scored at 4:32 of overtime and Mark Cundari also scored for the Barracuda as San Jose improved to 3-0-1 in San Diego this season. Anton Khudobin made 21 saves for the Gulls and Antoine Laganiere scored the only goal for San Diego.
Neither team scored in a fast flowing first period of play as San Diego held a slight 11-9 shot advantage through 20 minutes. Troy Grosenick and Anton Khudobin each stood tall between the pipes.
Action picked up in the middle frame as San Jose held a 9-5 shot advantage but neither team found the back of the net. Alex Gallant (6th FM) dropped the mitts with Gulls captain Joe Piskula (1st FM) at 6:25 as the physical play picked up. Shots were 18-15 Barracuda through 40 minutes of play.
Nark Cundari (3rd) gave San Jose a 1-0 lead after a one timer blast from 20 feet beat Khudobin after a terrific feed by Nikita Jevpalovs at 8:59 of the third period. Troy Grosenick stopped Kyle Boni on a penalty shot at 10:05 to keep the score 1-1. But the Gulls would tie the score shortly after as Antoine Laganiere (8th) fired home a rebound at 10:47 to tie the score at 1-1. Shots were 25-21 in favor of San Diego as the game headed to overtime.
In a back and forth overtime period, defenseman Karl Stollery (3rd) tapped in a Nikita Jevpalovs’ cross crease pass on a 2-on-1 for the game winner at 4:32 to give San Jose the 2-1 road victory.

Frazer McLaren (inj), Daniel Doremus, Greger Hanson, and Mirco Mueller did not dress for the Barracuda… Raffi Torres is expected to join the Barracuda this weekend…San Jose is now 3-0-1-0 in San Diego this season….the Barracuda have points in 11 of last 12 games (8-1-3-0)…Nikita Jevpalovs added two assists… the Barracuda began a stretch of playing 9 of 11 on the road….all three goals scored by Stollery this season have come against the Gulls.
