Up in Abby: The Barracuda close out their three-game roadie in Abbotsford on Sunday. The Cuda were dealt a 3-2 loss to the Canucks on Saturday and are now 2-1 versus Vancouver’s top affiliate this season. All-time, the Barracuda are now 5-6 on the road against the Canucks.

 

Saturday Sum Up: The Barracuda fell behind 2-0 on Saturday night at the Abbotsford Centre, managed to tie it up, but would ultimately fall 3-2 to the Canucks (18-15-1-1), who have now won five in a row. In the loss, Anthony Vincent and Luca Cagnoni scored for the Barracuda, while Abby got goals from Linus Karlsson, Nathan Smith, and Nils Aman and 34 saves from Nikita Tolopilo.

 

About Abbotsford: The Canucks enter Sunday having won five in a row, their longest winning streak of the season, and are now just three points behind the Barracuda in the Pacific Division. During the five-game stretch, Abby is averaging 4.4 goals-per-game and has notched a power-play goal in each victory (5/23=22%). The Canucks, who wrap up a six-game homestand on Sunday, are 8-2 over their last 10 games at the Abbotsford Centre and have a power-play goal in their last eight home games (8/33=24%).

 

Shak is Back: The Sharks reassigned defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin to the Barracuda on Monday. During his recall, the former first-rounder who turned 23 on Jan. 10, skated in 10 games in the NHL, scoring his first goal on Dec. 27 vs. Vegas. A year ago, in his first full season in North America, Mukhamadullin represented the Barracuda at the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic in San Jose and was named the team’s MVP.

 

Hot Pot: Barracuda forward Andrew Poturalksi was selected to his third AHL All-Star Classic last Wednesday. Among league skaters, the ninth-year pro is T-second in points (36) and power-play goals (7), T-sixth in assists (21), and T-eighth in goals (15). Over his last 12 games, he has 15 points (6+9=15).

 

All-Star Asky: Current Sharks goaltender Yaroslav Askarov was named to his third AHL All-Star Classic in three years last Wednesday. In 14 games for the Barracuda this season he has gone 9-4-1, with a 2.00 goals-against average, a .938 save percentage, and three shutouts. Among AHL backstops he is first in save percentage, T-second in shutouts, and third in goals-against average. Askarov began his Barracuda career by collecting consecutive shutouts and went 5-0 with a 1.20 GAA and .959 SV% in October, earning AHL Goaltender of the Month honors. In seven games with the Sharks, the 22-year-old is 3-2-2, with a 2.30 GAA and .923 SV%.

   

Sparkling Special Teams: The Barracuda rank first in the AHL on the penalty kill (87.7%) entering Saturday and T-third in shorthanded goals. Additionally, the club boasts the league’s fourth-best power play (21.6%). Versus the Canucks, the Barracuda are 5-for-14 (35.7%) on the power play and 12-for-13 on the penalty kill (92.3%).

 

Luca Lightning: Rookie blueliner Luca Cagnoni scored on Saturday and is now T-fourth among AHL defenders in points (23), T-second in goals (9), T-third in power-play goals (5), and power-play assists (9), and second in power-play points (14). Among rookies, he is first in power-play points, T-first in power-play assists, and second in power-play goals.

 

Cuda Killer: Former Sharks draft pick Linus Karlsson scored on Saturday and now has 11 points (6+5=11) in 13 career games against SJ and four points (2+2=4) in his last. Karlsson has goals in his last three contests and points in his last five (5+2=7). The 25-year-old was dealt to Vancouver on February 25, 2019 for Jonathan Dahlen.
