Marlies Marching In: The Barracuda close out their four-game season series with the Toronto Marlies (Toronto Maple Leafs) on Sunday afternoon at Tech CU Arena. Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead on Saturday, the Barracuda were dealt a 4-3 overtime loss by the Marlies. The Barracuda split a weekend set with the Leafs' affiliate in Toronto in November and are now 1-1-1-0 on the season series.
Home Cooking: The Barracuda, who began a season-long seven-game homestand on Wednesday, enter Sunday having picked up points in their last four games on home ice and are are now third in the AHL in home winning percentage (.737). The Marlies have won four in a row and are in the midst of a nine-game road trip that began on Jan. 11 in Utica and will wrap up in Bakersfield next Saturday.
Saturday’s Showdown: The Barracuda jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Saturday afternoon at Tech CU Arena, but the Toronto Marlies stormed back to win 4-3 in overtime. In the loss, Andrew Poturalski, Jack Thompson, and Jimmy Schuldt notched goals while Georgi Romanov suffered the OTL. Schuldt’s game-tying goal with 13 seconds left in regulation was shorthanded and with his team’s net empty.
Toronto Time: After dropping the first meeting 3-0 on November 23 at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, the Barracuda bounced back the following day and earned a 2-1 shootout win over the Marlies. In the victory, Danil Gushchin tied the score halfway through the third period and scored the game-winner in a shootout. Gabriel Carriere made 31 saves to earn the win while Matt Murray suffered the loss, allowing one goal on 26 shots.
Hot Pot: Andrew Poturalski scored on Saturday and now has six points (3+3=6) in his last three games, including goals in each. Since Dec. 15, the nine-year vet has had five multi-point games, including a pair of four-point efforts, and 21 points (9+12=21) during the 15-game stretch. One of the club’s two All-Star selections, Potsy is pacing the league in points (42), T-third in power-play goals (7), T-fourth in goals (18), and T-fifth in assists (24). The New Hampshire alumni is a two-time AHL Calder Cup Champion and scoring champion.
Calling Collin: The Sharks assigned rookie forward Collin Graf to the Barracuda on Friday after a 10-game stint in the NHL. Despite not playing in the AHL since Dec. 29, the 22-year-old entered Saturday’s game T-third among AHL rookies in scoring (26) and first in assists (20). On Saturday, he picked up a helper and now has points in his last four games (1+3=4).
Major Movement: The Sharks acquired Pavol Regenda from the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday in exchange for Justin Bailey. On Friday, the org signed Colin White to an NHL contract for the remainder of the season, recalling himself and Scott Sabourin for the first time this year.
Sparkling Special Teams: The Barracuda rank first in the AHL on the penalty kill (86.9%) entering Sunday and T-second in shorthanded goals (7). Additionally, the club boasts the league’s fourth-best power play (21.9%). The Marlies have the league's fourth-ranked PK (85.8%) and seventh PP (85.5%).
Even Steeves: Marlies forward Alex Steeves collected two points (1+1=2) on Saturday and now has five over his last two games (3+2=5). The Notre Dame alumni is first in the AHL in goals (22), T-third in power-play goals (7), and T-fourth in points (37). The undrafted forward was with the Maple Leafs when the Marlies faced the Barracuda in November. Steeves, along with teammate Logan Shaw, will represent the North Division at the 2025 AHL All-Star Classic next month in Coachella Valley.
