Texas Two-Step: The Barracuda and Texas Stars (Dallas Stars) face off for the second straight night on Wednesday. The two clubs split a pair of games in mid-February in Cedar Park before having their game on Feb. 16 postponed due to inclement weather in Texas. Tonight’s game will serve has the rescheduled game for Feb. 16 as the Stars will be considered the home team. The Barracuda has a lifetime record of 10-6-1-2 against the Stars and are 6-2-0-1 in San Jose. On Tuesday, the Stars scored four times in the first en-route to a 7-2 win.
Shining Stars: Stars forwards Adam Mascherin (15+13=28) and Riley Damiani (6+19=25) rank third and sixth respectively in the AHL in scoring entering Wednesday. Mascherin picked up a pair of goals and added an assist in the Stars win on Tuesday and now sits only two points shy of Cooper Marody for the AHL’s lead in goals. Damiani’s 19 helpers are tied for second in the league. Among rookies, Damiani is first in points and assists and Stars first-round pick in 2019 Thomas Harley is tied for sixth in points among defensemen (5+9=14), first in minors (12) and third in shots (50).
Maxed Out: Barracuda forward Maxim Letunov scored again on Tuesday and now has goals (5) in four of his last six games. Letunov is tied for second on the team in goals (7) and in power-play goals (2). A season ago, Letunov was the team’s MVP as he collected a team best 40 points (12+28=40) in 50 games.
First Times the Charm: Rookie defenseman Brinson Pasichnuk and rookie forward Scott Reedy each scored their first pro goals on Sunday in the Barracuda’s 5-1 win over Ontario. The Sharks signed Pasichnuk as an undrafted free agent this offseason from Arizona State. Reedy just finished his senior season at Minnesota and joined the Barracuda on Tuesday after signing his entry-level contract the previous Friday.
Trade Winds: The Sharks were wheeling and dealing before the NHL’s trade deadline on Monday, as the organization stockpiled draft capital and added a pair of players. Notable departures were forward Antti Suomela who was traded to Toronto for Alex Barabanov, Stefan Noeson who was also traded to Toronto in a separate deal, and Nick DeSimone who was sent to Vegas. The Sharks also traded Fredrik Claesson to the Lightning for goalie prospect Magnus Chrona. DeSimone ranks fourth in Barracuda history in games played (190), points (91), and assists (65).
