With the 31st pick of the NHL Draft, the Sharks select defenseman Jeremy Roy as the first selection of the second round.

Roy is described as a “gifted two-way defenseman,” who has great awareness on the ice due to an outstanding knowledge of the game. His game and style of play is often compared to that of Drew Doughty and Duncan Keith.

1. The smooth-skating defenseman has great vision and creativity to set up a potent power play. He also has a strong and accurate point shot to back up his passing ability, rounding out his ability to be a highly effective power play quarterback.

2. Roy led the Sherbrooke Phoenix defense this past season in scoring, despite playing only 46 games. He scored five goals and 38 assists for 43 points, and added five more points in six games in the QMJHL playoffs.

3. He competed at the 2015 U18 World Junior Championship for Team Canada, where he scored three goals and one assist in seven games – including a hat trick against Latvia. After the tournament was completed, he was selected by his coaches as one of the top three players for Canada.

4. Roy’s international experience does not end there. He was assistant captain on the gold medal 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Canada team. Roy served as captain for Quebec at the 2014 World U17 Hockey Challenge, and led defensemen in scoring with one goal and four assists in six games.

5. Jeremy Roy began skating when he was 5 years old and took to it quickly. While skating, he saw a power skating group practicing on the other half of the ice and immediately wanted to join in. So at age 5, he was practicing with 7-10 year olds, which benefitted him greatly when he began playing hockey the next year at 6 years old.
