Nov 19, 2017

SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Barracuda (6-7-0-1) fell to the Ontario Reign (5-7-0-1) at SAP Center on Sunday, splitting the weekend home series after giving up three goals to the Reign in the final period of play.

After failing to score in Saturday’s match-up, the Reign took an early 1-0 lead in the first period on Sunday when Matt Luff (2) found the back of the net at the 2:22 mark. San Jose’s Jon Martin (1) evened the game five minutes later with his first goal of the season with a wrister coming off an assist from Nick DeSimone. Despite two power play opportunities for the Reign through the remainder of the period, the score remained locked at one-goal apiece entering the second period.

Despite carrying a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal through the second period, the Barracuda failed to convert on any of their scoring opportunities and as it did at the end of the first, the game remained tied at 1-1.

The Reign found their offensive groove in the final period, scoring three goals while holding the Barracuda scoreless through the final 20 minutes of play.
Michael Mersch (5) took all of a minute and a half to give his team a lead 2-1, before Luff (3) put away his second of the night at the 12:10 mark, and Andrew Crescenzi (3) finished the Ontario scoring barrage with an empty-netter at 17:30.

Ontario’s Cal Peterson (3-3-1) earned the victory with 39 saves on 40 shots, while San Jose netminder Troy Grosenick (3-4-1) took the loss with 24 saves on 27 shots.
