Barracuda Head Coach Looks To Make AHL History This Weekend

Look Back:
The San Jose Barracuda (18-11-4-3, 43pts, .597%) presented by Barracuda Networks chomped five out of a possible eight points (2-1-1-0) in four games last week (including Monday afternoon) as they remain in 2nd place in the Pacific Division.  The Barracuda began the week with an exciting 2-1 overtime win at San Diego on Jan 13 to kick off a brief three game road trip.  San Jose grabbed an impressive 5-2 win in Rockford on Jan 15 and extended their season long point streak to nine games (7-0-2-0) with a 2-1 overtime loss in Iowa on Jan 16.  San Jose returned home and dropped a 5-3 decision vs. Bakersfield on Jan 18 at the SAP Center.  The Barracuda have now played an AHL high 13 overtime games this season which includes six of their last ten games.

The Barracuda hold a playoff position with the 2nd spot in the Pacific and are now 15-5-4-2 in their last 26 games overall.  With the two wins last week, Head coach Roy Sommer picked up wins #634 and #635, trailing only Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history.

A number of transactions occurred in a very busy week for the Barracuda on and off the ice.  Raffi Torres was loaned to the Barracuda on a conditioning assignment from the SJ Sharks on Jan 14 and made his debut in the Barracuda’s win in Rockford on Jan 15.  Torres played two games last week and did not register a point for the Barracuda and remains with the club heading into the week. Forward Alex Gallant signed a standard player AHL contract for the rest of the season and for the 2016-17 season after he played 15 games on a PTO from the Utah Grizzlies (ECHL). Forward Greger Hanson was released from his PTO on Jan 18 and was returned to the Allen Americans (ECHL) and forward Ben Smith was loaned to the Barracuda on Jan 21 from the SJ Sharks.

Karl Stollery (2-1-3), Bryan Lerg (2-2-4), Ryan Carpenter (1-3-4), and Petter Emanuelsson (1-2-3) all contributed offensively for the Barracuda last week while goaltender Aaron Dell made 45 saves on Jan 16 to shine in between the pipes.  Trevor Parkes led the way with five points (2-3-5) and currently rides a three game point streak for the Barracuda as San Jose begins a weekend home-and-home set with the Reign on Friday in Ontario. 

The San Jose Barracuda player of the week nominee is forward Trevor Parkes.  The 24-year-old from Fort Erie, Ontario recorded five points (2-3-5) in four games with the Barracuda last week to lead the way.

COMING UP:
The San Jose Barracuda play twice this weekend vs. the Ontario Reign (AHL affiliate of the LA Kings) in a battle of the two top teams in the Pacific Division.

On Friday, the Barracuda visit the Ontario Reign at 7pm. Coverage begins at 7pm on AM 1220 KDOW.

On Saturday, the Barracuda host the Ontario Reign on Military Appreciation Night at 7:30pm on a Sharks/Barracuda doubleheader day at the SAP Center. The Barracuda will wear a special camouflage jersey which will be auctioned off during the game to benefit Defending the Blue Line and military members will be recognized throughout the game. Doors open at 6:45pm as the San Jose Barracuda host the Reign at 7:30pm.  January 23 marks the 9th of 13 San Jose Barracuda and San Jose Sharks doubleheaders at the SAP Center this season.  The San Jose Sharks host the Minnesota Wild at 1pm. Fans must have a separate ticket for both games.   Coverage begins at 7pm on AM 1220 KDOW.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer (635 wins) surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates.  Coach Sommer has coached 1380 AHL games – all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,711 games in the AHL and ECHL.  Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4, 2015 and surpassed Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history on March 27 in Springfield with his 611th win!  Roy needs 1 win to tie Fred “Bun Cook” (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history!

1.13.16 – San Diego 1 – San Jose 2 – OTW – Valley View Casino Center – San Diego, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (17-10-3-3, 40pts) presented by Barracuda Networks extended their season best point streak to seven games (6-0-1-0) with an exciting 2-1 overtime victory over the host San Diego Gulls (17-14-1-1, 36pts) in front of 6,023 fans at the Valley View Casino Arena on Wednesday evening.  Head coach Roy Sommer picked up win #634, trailing only Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history and goaltender Troy Grosenick (9-4-3) was spectacular in net with 24 saves and a penalty shot stop midway through the third period.  Karl Stollery scored at 4:32 of overtime and Mark Cundari also scored for the Barracuda as San Jose improved to 3-0-1 in San Diego this season. Anton Khudobin made 21 saves for the Gulls and Antoine Laganiere scored the only goal for San Diego.

Barracuda Head coach Roy Sommer picked up win #635, trailing only Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history as the San Jose Barracuda (18-10-3-3, 42pts) presented by Barracuda Networks extended their season best point streak to eight games (7-0-1-0) with a 5-2 win over the host Rockford IceHogs (22-10-2-3, 49pts) in front of 4,062 fans at the BMO Harris Bank Center on Friday evening. 
Goaltender Troy Grosenick (10-4-3) made 33 saves and Trevor Parkes scored a goal and added two assists as San Jose improved to 10-1-3-0 in their last 14 games.  Petter Emanuelsson, Bryan Lerg, Micheal Haley, and Jeremy Langlois also scored for San Jose as the Barracuda improved to 2-0-0-0 on their three game road trip.  Mark Visentin allowed five goals on 32 shots for the IceHogs as Mark McNeill provided the only two goals for Rockford as they dropped their first Friday night game this season in regulation (9-1-0-1).

1.16.16 – Iowa 2 – San Jose 1 – OTL– Wells Fargo Arena – Des Moines, IA
The San Jose Barracuda (18-10-4-3, 43pts) presented by Barracuda Networks extended their season best point streak to nine games (7-0-2-0) but dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the host Iowa Wild (10-25-2-3, 25pts) in front of 12,455 fans at the Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday evening.  Barracuda Head coach Roy Sommer remained with 635 wins and looks to tie Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history on Monday when the Barracuda host the Bakersfield Condors at 1:15pm at the SAP Center. Goaltender Aaron Dell (6-6-4) made 45 saves and Trevor Parkes scored the only goal as San Jose is now to 9-1-4-0 in their last 14 games.  Jordan Schroeder tied the game in the third period for the Wild and Gustav Olofson won the game in overtime as Leland Irving made 25 saves in net for the home win. The Barracuda finished with a 2-0-1-0 on their three game road trip. 

1.18.16 – Bakersfield 5 – San Jose 2 – L– SAP Center – San Jose, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (18-11-4-3, 43pts) presented by Barracuda Networks had their season high nine game point streak come to an end in a hard fought 5-3 loss to the visiting  Bakersfield Condors (16-14-2-2, 36pts) in front of 5,872 fans at the SAP Center on Monday afternoon.  Goaltender Troy Grosenick (10-5-3) made three saves on six shots before being replaced by Aaron Dell (6-6-4) who made 19 saves in relief. Ryan Carpenter (1-1-2), Karl Stollery (1-0-1) and Bryan Lerg (1-0-1) scored as San Jose is now 9-2-4-0 in their last 15 games.  Eetu Laurikainen made 42 saves in the win for the Condors with Ryan Hamilton (1-0-1), Rob Klinkhammer (2-1-3), Tyler Pitlick (1-1-2) and Joshua Winquist (1-1-2) scoring for the Condors.

*Welcome Back Al… goaltender Alex Stalock was loaned to the Barracuda on a conditioning assignment on Jan 2.  Stalock had a 76-53-10 record with a 2.63 GAA and a .909 save percentage with the Worcester Sharks in the AHL.  Al made 21 saves in a 5-1 win over the Texas Stars on Jan 3 in his first AHL start since April 20, 2013 at Syracuse.  Stalock picked up his 80th AHL win on Jan 6 and as recalled by the Sharks on Jan 7 after posting a 2-0-0 record with the Barracuda along with a 1.96 GAA and a .930 save %.

*PT a game in AHL… forward Chris Tierney picked up two assists in his Barracuda debut on Jan 3.  Tierney now has 32 points (9-23-32) in 31 games in the AHL with Worcester and San Jose.

*Racking up PIMS… forward Alex Gallant has 85 penalty minutes in his last 12 games (10 minor, 9 majors, a ten minute misconduct, and a game misconduct).

*Piling up the goals… Barclay Goodrow leads the Barracuda with 14 goals in just 28 games this season.

*Sharp Shooters… the Barracuda have two players with a shooting percentage over 20% this season (Haley 22.6%, Goldobin 20.0%).

*Shootout success… goaltender Aaron Dell has stopped 12 of 13 shooters he has faced in the shootout this season. (.923%)

*Shootout Success X2… forward Jeremy Langlois is 3-for-4 in the shootout this season (75%) with two game winners!

*Free Hockey… the Barracuda have played in 13 overtime games this season – the most in the AHL.  The Barracuda played six of nine games in OT in a stretch from Dec 30-Jan 16.

*Quick strikes… the Barracuda scored four goals in a 3:20 span in the second period on Dec 20 in 5-4 win vs. Stockton.  San Jose scored three goals in :50 seconds to close out the goal scoring rush.

*What a weekend… the line of Goodrow/Carpenter/Emanuelsson combined for 18 (7-11-18) points in two games (Dec 4-5) for the Barracuda in back-to-back wins vs. the Heat and the Condors.  The line scored 7 of the 13 goals for the Barracuda.

*1st pro hat trick… Barclay Goodrow recorded his first professional hat trick in the Barracuda’s 7-6 overtime win over the Condors on Dec 6. Goodrow scored three tiebreaking goals, the last coming 23 seconds into overtime as San Jose defeated Bakersfield, 7-6. The hat trick was the first multiple-goal game of Goodrow’s professional career, and gave him seven points in a span of less than 21 hours. 

*1st pro hat trick X2…. Nikolay Goldobin scored three goals, added an assist, and was +4 in the Barracuda’s 5-1 win over the Texas Stars on Jan 3, 2016.

*Plus Player… Ryan Carpenter registered an AHL season high +5 in San Jose’s 7-6OTW vs. Bakersfield on Dec 5.  Carpenter leads the Barracuda with a +16 rating this season.

*Monkey of the back…Petter Emanuelsson scored his first two goals of the season on Dec 5 in the 7-6OTW vs. the Condors.  The goals broke an 18 game goalless drought to start the season and were his first since Oct 24, 2014 vs. Syracuse.

*Lots of saves… goaltender Troy Grosenick made 49 saves in the 4-3SOL at Stockton on Nov 21. The 49 saves was a career high for Troy and the most saves by a goaltender this season in the AHL.

*Nice Record… Grosenick is 5-0-0- in his last six starts and 10-1-2 in his last 14 starts overall.

*Strange but true… the Barracuda are 0-3-0-1 vs. the Gulls at the SAP Center and have been outscored 4-14 in the process…meanwhile the Barracuda are 3-0-1-0 vs. the Gulls in San Diego with an 12-10 scoring edge.

*Cooling off the Heat… the Barracuda are 5-0-0-1 in four games vs. the Stockton Heat this season and hold a 26-16 scoring advantage.

*All 36 games… Jeremy Langlois, Joakim Ryan, Trevor Parkes, and Gus Young have played in all 36 games this season for the Barracuda.

*Doubleheaders… the first of 13 Sharks/Barracuda doubleheaders at the SAP Center occurred on Saturday, Nov 7.  The Barracuda fell to the SD Gulls (AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks) 3-2 at 1:15pm while the Sharks dropped a 1-0 game to the Ducks at 7:30pm.   • Barclay Goodrow scored the 1st overtime game winner in franchise history at 23 seconds of overtime in 7-6 win over Condors on Dec 5.
  • The Barracuda dropped their first overtime game 2-1 in Ontario on Dec 13.

*Road Warriors… the Barracuda are 8-3-3-2 on the road this season and finished up on a seven game road trip (3-2-0-2) with a 3-1 win in Charlotte on Nov 25.  San Jose is in the middle of a stretch where they play nine of 11 games on the road.  The three regulation losses are tied for the least in the AHL with Toronto.

*Suspensions…San Jose Barracuda defenseman Karl Stollery was suspended for one (1) game as a consequence of an elbowing incident in a game vs. San Diego on Oct. 21. Stollery was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 28.1 (supplementary discipline). Karl missed San Jose’s game on Oct. 23 vs. San Diego.

*Pro Debuts:  Patrick McNally and Nikita Jevpalovs each made their professional debuts for the Barracuda on Oct 9….Adam Helewka made his professional debut Oct 15 at Stockton.

*AHL Debut… Alex Gallant played his 1st AHL game on Nov 13 at San Diego and picked up his first AHL fighting major vs. Curt Gogol on Dec 13 at Ontario.

*Always remember your first… Nikita Jevpalovs scored his first professional goal in the Barracuda’s 4-1 win in Stockton on Oct 15… Joakim Ryan and Julius Bergman each scored their first pro goals in the Barracuda’s 5-4 win vs. Texas on Nov 28.

*First AHL goals…Danny Doremus scored his first AHL goal and grabbed his first AHL assist in 7-6OTW vs. Condors.

*Nikolay Goldobin became the first SJ Barracuda player to receive an NHL recall on Oct 15 and scored his 1st NHL goal in his 2nd NHL game in the Sharks 6-3 loss at the NY Islanders on Oct 17.

*OT penalty shot… goaltender Troy Grosenick stopped Gulls defenseman Brandon Montour at 1:05 of the overtime period in the Barracuda’s 4-3 shootout win at San Diego on Nov 13.

*2 Penalty Shots, 1 period…referee Garrett Rank awarded two penalty shots in the 1st period of the Barracuda’s 3-2 loss to the Stars on Nov 29. Troy Grosenick stopped Curtis MacKenzie at 10:52 while John Muse stopped Jeremy Langlois at 14:53.

*Score first… the Barracuda have scored FIRST 15 times in 36 games this season (9-2-3-1). – Carpenter 1, Haley 2, Lerg 1, McCarthy 2, Langlois 2, Hanson 1, Parkes 3, Stollery  1, Goldobin 1, Cundari 1

*Breaking down the roster…. The Barracuda opening roster features nine Americans, nine Canadians, three Swedes, one Russian, one Swiss, and one Latvian.

*4 National Champions… The Barracuda have had four players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championships…. Gus Young was captain with Yale University in 2013….John McCarthy with Boston University in 2009…Bryan Lerg with Michigan State in 2007… Ben Smith with Boston College in 2008 and 2010.

*Memorial Cups…defenseman Mark Cundari and forward Scott Timmins each won a pair of Memorial Cups in 2009 and 2010 with the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). Vincent Arseneau won the Cup with the Shawinigan Cataractes in 2012.

*Swedish Elite League Championship…. both Melker Karlsson and Petter Emanuelsson won back-to-back championships with Skelleftea AIK in the SWEHL in 2013 and 2014.

*Kelly Cup Champions… Chris Crane, Vincent Arseneau, and Greger Hanson each won the Kelly Cup (ECHL Championship) with the Allen Americans last season.

*CHL Championship… Aaron Dell and Greger Hanson won the Central Hockey League Championship with the Allen Americans in 2013.

*Spengler Cup… defenseman Mark Cundari won a gold medal at the 2016 Spengler Cup for Team Canada.

*Oldest/Youngest… Bryan Lerg is the oldest player on the Barracuda roster (born Jan 20, 1986) while Julius Bergman is the youngest (born Nov 2, 1995).

*Bros… Alex Gallant’s older brother Brett plays for the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL.

*High scorer in the Q… rookie Nikita Jevpalovs recorded 100 points (49-51-100) in 64 games for Blainville-Boisbriand in the QMJHL last season. The 21-year-old from Riga, Latvia has eight points (2-8-10) in 35 games for the Barracuda.

*The Sherriff… Frazer McLaren re-signed in the off-season with the SJ Sharks organization after spending the last 2+ seasons in the Toronto organization. McLaren holds the Worcester Sharks franchise record with 577 penalty minutes and has 19 penalty minutes in 10 games for the Barracuda.

*J-Mac… John McCarthy led the Worcester Sharks in points (151) and goals (63) and was tied in the franchise lead in games played (277).  McCarthy also served as the Worcester Sharks captain in 2012-13 and was the Worcester Sharks MVP in 2011-12. McCarthy is (4-12-16) in 35 games with the Barracuda and (0-0-0) in one game with the SJ Sharks.

Coming Up for the San Jose Barracuda:
The San Jose Barracuda play twice this weekend vs. the Ontario Reign (AHL affiliate of the LA Kings) in a battle of the two top teams in the Pacific Division.

On Friday, the Barracuda visit the Ontario Reign at 7pm. Coverage begins at 7pm on AM 1220 KDOW.

On Saturday, the Barracuda host the Ontario Reign on Military Appreciation Night at 7:30pm on a Sharks/Barracuda doubleheader day at the SAP Center. The Barracuda will wear a special camouflage jersey which will be auctioned off during the game to benefit Defending the Blue Line and military members will be recognized throughout the game. Doors open at 6:45pm as the San Jose Barracuda host the Reign at 7:30pm.  January 23 marks the 9th of 13 San Jose Barracuda and San Jose Sharks doubleheaders at the SAP Center this season.  The San Jose Sharks host the Minnesota Wild at 1pm. Fans must have a separate ticket for both games.   Coverage begins at 7pm on AM 1220 KDOW.
