Barracuda Look To Continue Success On The Road

Look Back:
The San Jose Barracuda (5-6-0-1, 11pts, .458%) presented by Barracuda Networks chomped four out of a possible six points last week (2-1-0-0) in three road games to kick off a season long seven game road trip.  San Jose began the trip with a hard fought 2-1 loss in Ontario (LA Kings AHL affiliate) on Nov 11.  The Barracuda bounced back with a come from behind 4-3 shootout thriller in San Diego (Anaheim Ducks AHL affiliate) vs. the Gulls on Nov 13 and closed out the week with a 4-3 win in regulation over the Gulls on Nov 14.

San Jose is now 2-1-0-0 on the seven game road trip and 4-2-0-0 away from the SAP Center this season.  Jeremy Langlois is working on a four game point streak (3-2-5) as he recorded four points (2-2-4) and a shootout winner in three games last week.  Troy Grosenick picked up his first two victories of the season with back-to-back wins in San Diego highlighted by a 32 saves performance on Nov 14. Captain Bryan Lerg extended his point streak to five games (4-2-6) on Nov 13 while Scott Timmins scored a goal with the extra attacker on Nov 13 to force overtime before the shootout win. Karl Stollery, Mark Cundari, and Greger Hanson (GWG) all picked up their first goals of the season while Barclay Goodrow scored his 2nd goal of the year for the Barracuda last week.  In addition, Ryan Carpenter (0-3-3) and Dylan Demelo (0-2-2) each head into the two game road week with two game point streaks.

The Barracuda loaned Vincent Arseneau to the Allen Americans (ECHL) on Nov 12 and released Gary Steffes on Nov 12 from his PTO and sent him back to Allen.  San Jose recalled Danny Doremus from Allen on Nov 12 and signed the 2015 Kelly Cup playoffs MVP Greger Hanson to a PTO on Nov 12 from the Americans.  In addition, the Barracuda signed Utah Grizzlies (ECHL) forward Alex Gallant to a PTO on Nov 12 and signed Florida Everblades (ECHL) forward Mike Aviani to a PTO on Nov 15.  Micheal Haley, Melker Karlson, Nikolay Goldobin, and Mirco Mueller all remain on recall with the SJ Sharks.

The San Jose Barracuda player of the week nominee is forward Jeremy Langlois.  The 25-year-old from Tempe, AZ recorded four points (2-2-4), +3, 10 shots, and a shootout game winner in three games with the Barracuda last week.

On Wednesday, the Barracuda head to Bakersfield to battle the Condors (Edmonton Oilers AHL affiliate) with a special start time of 10:30am for a School Day Game.  Coverage begins at 10am online at www.kdow.biz and www.ahllive.com. Fans can listen on AM 1220 KDOW on a tape delay at 8pm.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer (622 wins) surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates.  Coach Sommer has coached 1356 AHL games – all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,690 games in the AHL and ECHL.  Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4, 2015 and surpassed Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history on March 27 in Springfield with his 611th win!  Roy needs 14 wins to tie Fred “Bun Cook” (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history!

The San Jose Barracuda (3-6-0-1, 7pts) presented by Barracuda Networks kicked off their season long seven game road trip with a 2-1 loss to the host Ontario Reign (8-1-2-0, 18pts) in front of 7,424 fans at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on Wednesday evening.   Jeremy Langlois scored his 3rd goal in his last four games and Aaron Dell was solid with 21 saves in net for San Jose.  Kurtis MacDermid and Sean Backman scored first period goals for the Reign while goaltender Peter Budaj made 16 saves for his 8th win of the season as Ontario won their third straight game.

11.13.15 – San Diego 3 – San Jose 4 – SOW – Valley View Casino Center – San Diego, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (4-6-0-1, 9pts) presented by Barracuda Networks came from behind to defeat the host San Diego Gulls (9-2-0-1, 19pts) by the score of 4-3 in the shootout in front of 10,010 fans at the Valley View Casino Center on Friday evening.   Barclay Goodrow and Bryan Lerg scored second period goals for San Jose while Scott Timmins scored with 24 seconds left in the third period to tie the score at 3-3 to force overtime.  Joakim Ryan had an overtime goal waved off, Troy Grosenick stopped a penalty shot in overtime, and Jeremy Langlois scored in the third round of the shootout for the walk-off game winner in a thriller.

11.14.15 – San Diego 3 – San Jose 4 – W – Valley View Casino Center – San Diego, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (5-6-0-1, 11pts) presented by Barracuda Networks defeated the host San Diego Gulls (9-3-0-1, 19pts) by the score of 4-3 in regulation in front of 11,396 fans at the Valley View Casino Center on Saturday evening.   Troy Grosenick made 32 saves in his second straight win while Jeremy Langlois, Karl Stollery, Mark Cundari, and Greger Hanson all scored for San Jose.  John McCarthy and Ryan Carpenter each added two assists as the Barracuda swept the weekend set in San Diego.

*1257 GAMES…..With the 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME vs. the Pirates on March 26, 2014, head coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1,256 games) for the most games coached in the AHL.

*Doubleheaders… the first of 13 Sharks/Barracuda doubleheaders at the SAP Center occurred on Saturday, Nov 7.  The Barracuda fell to the SD Gulls (AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks) 3-2 at 1:15pm while the Sharks dropped a 1-0 game to the Ducks at 7:30pm. The next doubleheader is Saturday, Nov 28 as the Barracuda host the Texas Stars at 1:15pm while the Sharks host the Flames at 7:30pm.

*Goal drought… the Barracuda had been shutout in 164:04 of play before John McCarthy scored at 2:45 of the first period on Nov 1 vs. Ontario.…the last goal scored was a shorthanded goal by Scott Timmins at 18:40 of the first period vs. the Gulls on Oct 21.

*High scorer in the Q… rookie Nikita Jevpalovs recorded 100 points (49-51-100) in 64 games for Blainville-Boisbriand in the QMJHL last season. The 21-year-old from Riga, Latvia has four points (2-2-4) in 12 games for the Barracuda.

*The Sherriff… Frazer McLaren re-signed in the off-season with the SJ Sharks organization after spending the last 2+ seasons in the Toronto organization. McLaren holds the Worcester Sharks franchise record with 577 penalty minutes and has 12 penalty minutes in six games for the Barracuda.

*J-Mac… John McCarthy led the Worcester Sharks in points (151) and goals (63) and was tied in the franchise lead in games played (277).  McCarthy also served as the Worcester Sharks captain in 2012-13 and was the Worcester Sharks MVP in 2011-12. McCarthy is (1-5-6) in 11 games with the Barracuda and  (0-0-0) in one game with the SJ Sharks.
