BARRACUDA OUTSHOOT ICEHOGS BUT FALL 4-1

Mar 17, 2024

Rockford, IL – The San Jose Barracuda (18-29-9-2, 47 pts.) fell behind by a pair of goals in the first period on Sunday afternoon at the BMO Center and mustered just one goal despite outshooting the Rockford IceHogs (28-22-5-2, 63 pts.) 35-25 in an eventual 4-1 loss.

In the loss, Ethan Cardwell buried his team-leading 17th goal of the year and second in as many games. Cardwell is now tied for fifth in goals among AHL rookies.

After the Barracuda were called for a minor penalty at 4:03, the IceHogs would break the ice on their first shot of the game when Rem Pitlick found Mike Hardman (18) parked atop the crease. The Hogs would extend their lead at 12:28 after Cole Guttman (11) won a faceoff and then tipped in a point shot seconds later. Down by two, the Barracuda would draw its first penalty and on the ensuing power play, Jack Studnicka rushed up the right wing and swung a pass to Cardwell (17) who was driving the net, cutting the Rockford lead to 2-1.

Despite going on the only two power plays in the frame and outshooting the Hogs 13-8, the Barracuda failed to beat Drew Commesso, and with under two minutes to go in the period, Guttman (12) would notch his second of the game as Pitlick found him charging the net.

In the third, the IceHogs would all but seal the win just 41 seconds into the period as Jackson Cates (11) beat Eetu Makiniemi from in tight. The Barracuda would outshoot the Hogs 13-6 but failed to score again, falling 4-1.
