Barracuda Set For Calder Cup Playoffs

Look Back:
The San Jose Barracuda (31-26-8-3, 73pts, .537%) presented by Barracuda Networks chomped two out of a possible four points (1-1-0-0) in the final two games of the regular season. The Barracuda fell by the score of 5-4 in Stockton on Apr 16 in the final road game of the regular season to finish with a 1-4-1-0 record on their six game road trip. Needing just a single point in their final regular season game of the season, San Jose destroyed the Stockton Heat 6-0 in front of a great crowd of 7,664 at SAP Center in the regular season finale on Apr 17 to clinch the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. (Charlotte Checkers were eliminated)
San Jose finished in 4th place in the Pacific Division with a .537 winning percentage and will battle the top seeded Ontario Reign (AHL affiliate of the LA Kings) in the Pacific Division Semifinals in a best of five series. As the top seed, the Ontario Reign elected to have the first two games of the series in San Jose before hosting games 3-5 in Ontario. Complete schedule here:

Mirco Mueller was loaned from the Sharks to the Barracuda on Apr 11 and Matt Tennyson returned to the SJ Barracuda lineup last weekend after he was reassigned by the Sharks on a conditioning assignment on Apr 13. The Barracuda signed forward Aaron Sims (Evansville-ECHL) to a PTO on Apr 13 and he made his AHL debut with the Barracuda at Stockton on Apr 16.
Highlights on the ice last week included Nikolay Goldobin and Barclay Goodrow each recording their 20th goals of the season for the Barracuda vs. the Heat. Nikolay led all players with five points (2-3-5) in the two games while Jeremy Morin (1-2-3), Jeremy Langlois (1-2-3), Trevor Parkes (3-0-3), and Joakim Ryan (0-3-3) all added three points. Aaron Dell made 41 saves and picked up his 4th shutout of the season in San Jose’s playoff clinching victory over the Heat on Apr 17 and Alex Gallant scored his 1st career AHL goal on Apr 17 – the last goal scored in the AHL for the 2015-16 regular season.
The San Jose Barracuda player of the week nominee is rookie Nikolay Goldobin. The 20-year-old from Mockobckar, Russia recorded five points (2-3-5) and was +3 in two games last week – the two goals were his 20th and 21st of the season.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer (1404 game coached) surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1,412 AHL games – all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,743 games in the AHL and ECHL. Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4, 2015 and surpassed Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history on March 27 in Springfield with his 611th win! Roy (649 wins) surpassed Fred “Bun Cook” (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history on Feb 10, 2016 with a 4-2 win vs. the Ontario Reign at SAP Center.

Carpenter made his NHL debut in the Sharks 2-0 loss to the Wild on Dec 12 and was named to the 2016 AHL All-Star Classic where he added an assist for the Pacific Division.

- Micheal Haley had eight fighting majors in 16 games with the SJ Sharks and had 23 points (12-11-23) in 41 games for the Barracuda. Haley scored his 1st NHL goal in 1814 days on March 5, 2016 vs Vancouver at SAP Center. – Haley is currently with the Sharks.
- Karl Stollery was 2nd among Barracuda defensemen in points (6-18-24) which includes 12 power play points (3-9-12) through 67 games.
- Rookie Joakim Ryan ranked 1st among Barracuda defensemen in points (2-26-28) through 66 games. – Ryan was named the SJ Barracuda Unsung Hero for the 2015-16 season.
- Rookie Nikolay Goldobin had 44 points (21-23-44) in 60 games for the Barracuda and two points (1-1-2) in nine games for the SJ Sharks. Goldobin ranked 13th among AHL rookies in points.
- Barclay Goodrow has 39 points (20-19-39) in 57 games for the Barracuda this season along with three points (0-3-3) in 14 games with the Sharks this season. Goodrow was named to the 2016 AHL All Star Classic where he added an assist for the Pacific Division.
- Goaltender Aaron Dell finished 17-16-6 this season with a 2.42 GAA and a .922 save %. Dell stopped 12 of 13 shooters in the shootout this season and made at the time an AHL high 50 saves in net on Feb 10 vs. Ontario. Dell ranked 8th in the AHL on GAA and 4th in save %. Dell received his 1st NHL recall on Feb 27 and was the backup goaltender for two games for the Sharks.
- Goaltender Troy Grosenick finished 11-10-4 this season with a 3.16 GAA and a .894 save %. Grosenick made at the time an AHL high 49 saves on Nov 21 in a 4-3SOL at Stockton.
- The San Jose Barracuda players wear the same jersey number with the SJ Sharks if they are to receive a NHL recall this season.

The San Jose Barracuda (30-26-8-3, 71pts) presented by Barracuda Networks failed to clinch the final playoff spot in the Western Conference after a 5-4 regulation loss to the host Stockton Heat (32-31-2-2, 68pts) in front 8,041 fans at Stockton Arena on Saturday evening. The Barracuda will need one point to clinch a playoff spot on Sunday at 3pm on FAN APRECIATION DAY at SAP Center vs. the Stockton Heat. Trevor Parkes (2-0-2), Nikolay Goldobin (1-1-2), and Joakim Ryan (0-2-2) all had multi point games for San Jose while Aaron Dell made 23 saves in net in the loss. Nikita Jevpalovs also scored for the Barracuda in a wild game that saw San Jose trail 3-1, lead 4-3, but lose 5-4 in regulation. Kenny Agostino recorded four points (2-2-4) for the Heat as Stockton defeated the Barracuda for the first time this season in regulation.

The San Jose Barracuda (31-26-8-3, 73pts) presented by Barracuda Networks clinched the final playoff spot in the Western Conference on the final day of the AHL regular season after a 6-0 victory over the visiting Stockton Heat (32-32-2-2, 68pts) in front 7,664 fans at SAP Center on Sunday afternoon. The Barracuda will host the top seeded Ontario Reign (LA Kings AHL affiliate) in Game 1 of the Pacific Division Semifinals on Friday, Apr 22 at 7:30pm at SAP Center. Barclay Goodrow, Jeremy Langlois, Trevor Parkes, Nikolay Goldobin, Jeremy Morin, and Alex Gallant all scored for San Jose while Aaron Dell made 41 saves in net for the win. Eleven different players recorded at least a point as the Barracuda finished with an 18-13-2-1 record on home ice this regular season.

*BIG DEAL!... The American Hockey League announced last week that Ryan Carpenter was selected as the winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award as the 2015-16 IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. This award has been presented annually since 1998 to an AHL player for his outstanding contributions to his local community and charitable organizations. The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner is selected by the AHL and representatives from IOA and American Specialty from among 30 individual team Man of the Year honorees. Carpenter hit the ground running in the Barracuda’s first season in San Jose, spearheading several initiatives and ensuring the organization’s positive and productive presence in the community which included teaching several Barracuda Math classes, running practices for the SJ Junior Sharks, multiple hospital visits, and serving the Bay Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
*NHL/AHL affiliates to do battle... the Sharks face the LA Kings in the 1st round of the Stanley Cup playoffs (Sharks lead 2-1)… the Barracuda face the Ontario Reign in the 1st round of the Calder Cup playoffs. The Reign are the AHL affiliate of the LA Kings.
*PLAYOFFS….The San Jose Barracuda (31-26-8-3, 73pts, .537%) are the number 4 seed and will play the number 1 seed and Pacific Division Champion Ontario Reign (44-19-4-1, 93pts, .684%) beginning with Game 1 at SAP Center on Friday, April 22 at 7:30pm.
*Some history… The AHL affiliates for the SJ Sharks and LA Kings have met twice before in the Calder Cup playoffs in Worcester and Manchester. In 2010, the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Worcester Sharks 4-2 in the Division Final and the Monarchs also defeated the Worcester Sharks in the Division Semifinal 4-2 in 2007.
*Ontario has experience…many of the players for the Ontario Reign won the Calder Cup last season as a member of the Manchester Monarchs. In fact, 15 players on the Ontario Reign roster were part of the 2015 Manchester Monarchs Calder Cup Champion team.

*Eight is enough…. The Barracuda allowed a season high eight goals in an 8-5 loss in Texas on Apr 9. It was the first time this season the Barracuda lost a game in regulation when scoring at least four goals in a game.
*Three amigos… Bryan Lerg (21 goals), Nikolay Goldobin (21), and Barclay Goodrow (20) all hit the 20 goal mark this season for the Barracuda. – SJ was one of nine teams that had at least three 20 goal scorers this season – Providence led the AHL with five.
*Raffi Watch… Raffi Torres played five games with the SJ Barracuda this season and did not register a point. Raffi Torres was traded On Feb 22 by the Sharks along with 2nd round draft picks in 2017 and 2018 for defenseman Roman Polak and forward Nick Spaling. Torres was reassigned by the Maple Leafs to the Barracuda on Feb 22 and is currently on the Barracuda roster. Torres announced on Feb 26 that he was not going to play the rest of the season. (heal injury)
*Streakers…. John McCarthy (2-6-8) has a six game point streak…. Trevor Parkes (3-2-5) and Jeremy Langlois (2-2-4) three games each….Petter Emanuelsson (2-0-2), Joakim Ryan (0-3-3), and Nikolay Goldobin (2-3-5) two games each.
*30 goal scorer added… the Barracuda received Jeremy Morin in the trade that saw Alex Stalock and Ben Smith go to Toronto on Feb 27. Morin had 30 goals with Rockford in 67 AHL games in 2012-13. The 24 year old from Auburn, NY has played in 82 games in the NHL with Chicago and Columbus. Morin had 14 points (5-9-14) in 18 games for the Barracuda so far since the trade.
*Cundari Loaned… defenseman Mark Cundari was reassigned to the Lake Erie Monsters on March 7. Cundari had eight points (3-5-8) in 34 games for the Barracuda.
*Good Barracuda…the Barracuda were not whistled for a single penalty in the 3-1 loss to the SD Gulls at SAP Center on March 27. The Gulls were whistled for 6 minor penalties in the game.
*Bad Barracuda…San Jose was whistled for a season high 39 penalty minutes on Apr 8 at Texas.
*PP Explosion… the Barracuda exploded for 4 power play goals in the 7-1 win over the Stockton Heat at SAP Center on March 1. San Jose went 4-7 with the man advantage and received power play goals from John McCarthy, Nikolay Goldobin X2, and Karl Stollery. In addition, Jeremy Langlois scored a shorthanded goal in the victory.
*Debut Winner…. Goaltender Joel Rumpel won his 1st AHL start with 22 saves in a 4-2 win vs. Bakersfield on March 6.

*1814 days….Micheal Haley scored his 1st NHL goal in 1814 days on March 5, 2016 vs the Vancouver Canucks at SAP Center. His last NHL goal was with the NY Islanders on March 19 2011 in Florida.
*All even… forward Trevor Parkes had 41 points this season (a career high in AHL) – not one of those points were scored on special teams.
*Nine Gamer… the Barracuda had a season high nine game point streak (7-0-2-0) from Dec 30 – Jan 16.
*Tale of two PK’s… the Barracuda had not allowed a power play goal in a season high seven straight games from Jan 3 – Jan 16 (17-for-17 on the kill) and had a penalty kill success rate of 87.1% (121-139) since Jan 3.
*PTO to AHL…Scott Timmins and Alex Gallant each began the seasons on PTO contracts before signing a SPC for the rest of the season. In addition, Alex Gallant signed an AHL deal for the Barracuda for the 2016-17 season as well.
*Welcome Back Al… goaltender Alex Stalock was loaned to the Barracuda on a conditioning assignment on Jan 2. Stalock had a 76-53-10 record with a 2.63 GAA and a .909 save percentage with the Worcester Sharks in the AHL. Al made 21 saves in a 5-1 win over the Texas Stars on Jan 3 in his first AHL start since April 20, 2013 at Syracuse. Stalock picked up his 80th AHL win on Jan 6 and as recalled by the Sharks on Jan 7 after posting a 2-0-0 record with the Barracuda along with a 1.96 GAA and a .930 save %. Stalock was traded to Toronto at the NHL trade deadline.
*PT a game in AHL… forward Chris Tierney picked up two assists in his Barracuda debut on Jan 3. Tierney now has 32 points (9-23-32) in 31 games in the AHL with Worcester and San Jose.
*Racking up PIMS… forward Alex Gallant ha6 122 penalty minutes in just 27 games (16 minors, 14 majors, a ten minute misconduct, and a game misconduct).
*Shootout success… goaltender Aaron Dell has stopped 12 of 13 shooters he has faced in the shootout this season. (.923%)
*Shootout Success X2… forward Jeremy Langlois was 3-for-4 in the shootout this season (75%) with two game winners!
*Free Hockey… the Barracuda played in 18 overtime games this season…The Barracuda played six of nine games in OT in a stretch from Dec 30-Jan 16. San Jose is 4W-8L in OT and 3W-3L in the shootout.
*16 shots against… the Barracuda allowed a season low 16 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Ontario Reign on March 16.
*23 shots against…in a period!.... San Jose allowed a season high 23 shots against in 2nd period on Apr 9 at Texas.
*Quick strikes… the Barracuda scored four goals in a 3:20 span in the second period on Dec 20 in 5-4 win vs. Stockton. San Jose scored three goals in :50 seconds to close out the goal scoring rush.
*What a weekend… the line of Goodrow/Carpenter/Emanuelsson combined for 18 (7-11-18) points in two games (Dec 4-5) for the Barracuda in back-to-back wins vs. the Heat and the Condors. The line scored 7 of the 13 goals for the Barracuda.
*1st pro hat trick… Barclay Goodrow recorded his first professional hat trick in the Barracuda’s 7-6 overtime win over the Condors on Dec 6. Goodrow scored three tiebreaking goals, the last coming 23 seconds into overtime as San Jose defeated Bakersfield, 7-6. The hat trick was the first multiple-goal game of Goodrow’s professional career, and gave him seven points in a span of less than 21 hours.
*1st pro hat trick X2…. Nikolay Goldobin scored three goals, added an assist, and was +4 in the Barracuda’s 5-1 win over the Texas Stars on Jan 3, 2016.
*1st pro point…. rookie defenseman Patrick McNally (Harvard Univ) picked up his first pro point (assist) in the 2-1 loss at San Antonio on Jan 29.
*1st AHL goal was the last AHL goal…. Forward Alex Gallant scored his 1st AHL goal at 19:30 of the third period on Apr 17 in 6-0 win vs. Heat. It was the last AHL regular season goal scored in the AHL during the 2015-16 season.
*Plus Player… Ryan Carpenter registered an AHL season high +5 in San Jose’s 7-6OTW vs. Bakersfield on Dec 5. Carpenter led the Barracuda with a +20 rating this season.
*Monkey of the back…Petter Emanuelsson scored his first two goals of the season on Dec 5 in the 7-6OTW vs. the Condors. The goals broke an 18 game goalless drought to start the season and were his first since Oct 24, 2014 vs. Syracuse.
*Monkey of Back X2… Nikita Jevpalovs broke a 31 game goalless drought with his 3rd goal of the season on Feb 13 vs. San Antonio.
*Lots of saves… goaltender Troy Grosenick made 49 saves in the 4-3SOL at Stockton on Nov 21. The 49 saves was a career high for Troy and the most saves by a goaltender at that point of the season in the AHL.
*50 stops… netminder Aaron Dell made 50 saves in the 4-2 win over the Ontario Reign on Feb 10 – at the time was the most saves by an AHL goaltender this season.
*Strange but true… the Barracuda went 1-4-0-1 vs. the Gulls at the SAP Center and were outscored 8-17 in the process…meanwhile the Barracuda were 3-2-1-0 vs. the Gulls in San Diego (17 GF, 20 GA).
*Strange again…the Barracuda went 2-4-0-0 vs. the Condors at the SAP Center but are 3-2-0-1 at the Rabobank Arena vs the Condors this season.
*Cooling off the Heat… the Barracuda went 9-1-1-1 in 12 games vs. the Stockton Heat this season and held a 56-30 scoring advantage. (average 4.67 goals scored per game) – the Barracuda went 6-0-0-0 vs. the Heat at SAP Center this season.
*Hump Day… the Barracuda went 7-2-2-2 on Wednesdays this season.
*House of Horrors… the Barracuda finished with a 0-4-2-0 record at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA this season. The Barracuda were outscored 6-14 in six games in Ontario this season,.

*Bros… Alex Gallant’s older brother Brett plays for the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL…. Michael Brodzinski’s older brother Jonny plays for the Ontario Reign.
*The Barracuda added two new players to the roster in late March as Jon Martin (#71) and Mike Brodzinski (#75) each made their professional debuts for the Barracuda on March 26. Jon Martin signed an entry level contract with the San Jose Sharks on March 2. Martin, 20, led the Swift Current Broncos with 69 points (38 goals, 31 assists) and posted 74 penalty minutes (two fighting majors) in 66 games in the Western Hockey League (WHL) this season. He ranked 9th in the league in goals and was named the WHL's Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 18. He has posted career highs in goals, assists and points this season as Swift Current's captain. Mike Brodzinski signed an ATO with the San Jose Barracuda on 3/26 after playing three seasons with the U. of Minnesota. Brodzinski, 20, finished his junior season ranking 1st among University of Minnesota defensemen in points (21), goals (8) and assists (8) in 37 games. His 11 power-play points ranked 1st on the team, and he set a career highs in goals, assists, points, penalty minutes and games played, while being named to the Big Ten Second All-Star Team this season. Other accolades in his third year with Minnesota include being named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week (Oct. 27), being named to the Mariucci Classic All-Tournament Team, becoming the first Big Ten defenseman to tally a hat trick (Jan. 23), and became just the second defenseman in league history to be named the first star of the week (Jan. 26).
*High scorer in the Q… rookie Nikita Jevpalovs recorded 100 points (49-51-100) in 64 games for Blainville-Boisbriand in the QMJHL last season. The 21-year-old from Riga, Latvia had 14 points (5-9-14) in 60 games for the Barracuda and six points (1-5-6) in five games for the Allen Americans.
*The Sherriff… Frazer McLaren re-signed in the off-season with the SJ Sharks organization after spending the last 2+ seasons in the Toronto organization. McLaren holds the Worcester Sharks franchise record with 577 penalty minutes and had 23 penalty minutes in 14 games for the Barracuda.
*J-Mac… John McCarthy led the Worcester Sharks in points (151) and goals (63) and was tied in the franchise lead in games played (277). McCarthy also served as the Worcester Sharks captain in 2012-13 and was the Worcester Sharks MVP in 2011-12. McCarthy was (16-29-45) in 67 games with the Barracuda and (0-0-0) in one game with the SJ Sharks.
*Career High… forward Trevor Parkes set a career AHL high in points this season. Parkes had 41 points (18-23-41) in 68 games for the Barracuda surpassing his previous high of 9 points in 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15.
*No sophomore slump… 2nd year pro Ryan Carpenter surpassed his point totals from last season (74gp, 12-22-34pts). Carpy had 55 points (18-37-55) in 66 games this season for the Barracuda.
