Colorado Connection: The Barracuda kick off a two-game series with the Colorado Eagles in Loveland on Tuesday, beginning a four-game road trip that will wrap up on Sunday in San Diego. Dating back to the 2021-22 season, the Barracuda have dropped seven (0-6-1-0) in a row at the Blue Arena, getting outscored 37-16 during that stretch.
Sky High in Colorado: The Eagles enter Tuesday having collected points in their last six games (4-0-2-0) and are 7-1-2-0 over their last 10 at home. Colorado boasts the AHL’s second-best home record (16-4-2-2, 36 pts.) and is a league-best +36 and +38 at Blue Arena. Former Sharks and Barracuda defender Jacob MacDonald is pacing all AHL blueliners in goals (17), power-play goals (9), and shots (122). Additionally, rearguard Wyatt Aamodt has a league-best +33 rating. The Eagles are averaging the fourth-fewest penalty minutes per game (10.89), rank fifth on the penalty kill (85.2%), and have scored the second-most shorthanded goals (8). Colorado currently sits at the second spot in the Pacific Division, five points behind first-place Calgary, with four games in hand. The Avs affiliate is fifth in the AHL in goals for (3.49) and sixth in goals against (2.65).
High Card: Barracuda forward Ethan Cardwell collected a pair of points (1+1=2) on Saturday, extending his points streak to eight games (3+7=10), the second-longest current streak in the AHL and the longest among any Barracuda skater this season. The sophomore forward already has six more assists than he did a year ago in 36 fewer games and currently ranks T-fifth in the league in helpers. The Barracuda franchise record for consecutive games with a point is 10, set in 2016-17 by Marcus Sorensen.
Sparkling Special Teams: The Barracuda enter Tuesday second in the AHL on the penalty kill (86.3%) and first in road PK (88.3%). Additionally, San Jose ranks fifth on the power play (21.7%). Versus the Eagles in two games, the Barracuda are 4-for 17 on the PP (23.5%) and 12-for-15 on the PK (80%).
All About Asky: Netminder Yaroslav Askarov is pacing the AHL in save percentage (.934), second in goals-against average (2.14), and T-second in shutouts (3). The 22-year-old was assigned back to the AHL last Sunday after a month and a half long stint with the Sharks. Back with the Barracuda: The Sharks reassigned forwards Andrew Poturalski and Collin Graf, along with defenseman Jack Thompson to the Barracuda on Monday. Poturalski is pacing the AHL in points (45). Meanwhile, Graf is third among rookies in assists (22), second in power-play assists (10), and seventh in points (30).
Pick of the Litter: The Barracuda signed forward Rem Pitlick for the remainder of the 2024-25 season last week. During his five-year pro career, the native of Ottawa, Ontario, has dressed in 132 games in the NHL with the Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, and Blackhawks, collecting 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists), and 54 penalty minutes. Additionally, he has skated in 148 AHL games with the Milwaukee Admirals, Chicago Wolves, Laval Rocket, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and Rockford, posting 125 points (55 goals, 70 assists), 90 penalty minutes, plus-25 rating. The 27-year-old was part of the multi-player, three-way trade between the Sharks, Pens, and Habs that included Erik Karlsson. In that deal, he was sent from the Canadiens to the Penguins.
Luca Lightning: 20-year-old defender Luca Cagnoni notched his 11th goal of the year on Friday and seventh on the power play. Among rookies, Cagnoni is first in power-play points (19) and power-play assists (12), T-first in power-play goals (7), and T-eighth in points (29). Among all skaters, he is second in power-play points.
