Barracuda Dazzle in Fifth Straight Win
Jan 10, 2016San Jose, CA –The San Jose Barracuda (16-10-2-3, 37pts) presented by Barracuda Networks won their season high fifth straight game with a 6-4 victory over the visiting San Antonio Rampage (15-14-7-0, 37pts) in front of 6,958 fans at the SAP Center on Saturday evening. The Barracuda four game home stand concludes on Sunday, Jan 10 vs. the San Antonio Rampage at 3pm at the SAP Center.
Head coach Roy Sommer picked up win #633, trailing only Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history and goaltender Troy Grosenick (8-4-3) made 24 saves in his return to the Barracuda.
Micheal Haley (2-1-3), Ryan Carpenter (1-1-2), Nikolay Goldobin (1-1-2), Barclay Goodrow (1-1-2), and Bryan Lerg (1-0-1) all scored for the Barracuda. John McCarthy (0-2-2), Trevor Parkes (0-2-2), Nikita Jevpalovs (0-1-1), Julius Bergman (0-1-1), and Jeremy Langlois (0-1-1) all added assists in the win.
Roman Will made 19 saves, and Spencer Martin made 6 saves in relief for the Rampage with Chris Bigras (1-0-1), Nikita Zadorov (1-0-1), Sam Henley (1-0-1) and Mat Clark (1-0-1) each scoring for the Rampage.
Two minutes into the game a spirited fight ensued between Alex Gallant (6th FM) and Daniel Maggio (5th FM) after several hard checks along the boards.
Matt Clark (1st) scored his first goal of the season a minute and a half later giving the Rampage the 1-0 lead at 3:26
Bryan Lerg (8th) put the Barracuda on the board with a left to right deke sliding the puck past Rampage goaltender Roman Will on a breakaway at 6:20 to tie the score at 1-1. Barclay Goodrow (14th) lit the lamp 22 seconds later, got the rebound six feet in front of the crease and ripped a wrister into the back of the net to give the Barracuda the 2-1 lead.
Later in the period Micheal Haley (10th) fired a one timer through the pipes while on the power play after a great feed by Ryan Carpenter at 16:41. San Jose went into the first intermission with the 14-8 shot advantage and the 3-1 lead.
The Barracuda kept the aggressive play going with Micheal Haley (11th) scoring 1:53 into the second period after redirecting the puck past Will and into the net.
A minute later the Rampage answered with a rebound goal from Sam Henley (2nd) at 3:00.
At 6:17 Nikolay Goldobin (11th) buried a wrister on the wraparound after picking up the loose puck behind the net to give the Barracuda the 5-2 lead. Shots were 10-6 in favor of San Jose in the second.
The Rampage changed goalies to start the third period putting Spencer Martin in net. The Rampage came out roaring with Nikita Zadorov (8th) scoring on a one-timer snapshot from the point that beat Grosenick 48 seconds in.
Ryan Carpenter (6th) scored at 4:28 on his own rebound with the puck sitting behind Will in the crease who thought he had control of the initial save to add to the Barracuda lead making it 6-3.
Chris Bigras (6th) scored on a one timer in the slot that ricocheted off of both posts and in at 15:27 but it was too little too late. Shots were 14-7 in favor San Antonio in the third period as the Barracuda won their 6th home game in the last seven at the SAP Center.
Notes: Three Stars: 3rd star: Ryan Carpenter (1-1-2) 2nd star: Trevor Parkes (0-2-2) 1st star: Micheal Haley (2-1-3)….Final shots were 31-28 in favor of San Jose… Roman Will (4-2-2) made 19 saves on 24 shots and Spencer Martin made 6 saves on 7 shots for San Antonio….Troy Grosenick (8-4-3) made 24 saves on 28 shots for San Jose in his first start since Dec 27…San Jose went 1-for-4 on the power play while San Antonio went 0-for-1… Daniel Doremus (inj), Frazer McLaren, (inj), Greger Hanson, and Patrick McNally did not dress for the Barracuda… forward Scott Timmins returned to the line-up after missing the last 12 games due to a leg injury….forward Petter Emanuelsson returned after missing three games due to injury…San Jose moved to 10-7-0-1 at the SAP Center this season…San Jose has won five straight games for the first time this season… Nikolay Goldobin (5-3-8) and Barclay Goodrow (3-2-5) each have a four game point streak… Jeremy Langlois (1-3-4) has a three game point streak… Bryan Lerg (1-1-2), John McCarthy (1-2-3) Julius Bergman (0-3-3), each have a two game point streak… Troy Grosenick is 4-0-1 in his last five starts and 8-1-2 in his last 11….it was the first time all season the Barracuda have not allowed a power play goal in three straight games.
