Barracuda Road Trip Continues in Texas
Apr 6, 2016Look Back:
The San Jose Barracuda (29-24-7-3, 68pts, .540%) presented by Barracuda Networks chomped two out of a possible six points (1-2-0-0) in three games last week. The Barracuda closed out a season long six game home stand with a 3-2-1-0 record after an impressive 3-1 win over the Ontario Reign at SAP Center on March 30. San Jose then began a six game road trip with a 4-2 loss in Bakersfield on April 1 followed by a 5-3 loss in San Diego on April 2 to close out the three game week. The Barracuda play three games this week in Texas as San Jose looks to gain ground on the Charlotte Checkers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
San Jose is currently in 4th place in the Pacific Division with a .540 winning percentage and currently .023 percentage points behind the Charlotte Checkers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. If the 5th place team in the Central Division has a better winning percentage than the 4th place team in the Pacific – there would be a cross-over between the two divisions. (that is currently the case as the 5th place Checkers in the Central have a better winning percentage than the 4th place Barracuda in the Pacific). The Barracuda have five games remaining on their regular season schedule (1 home, 4 road) including three games this week. Please click HERE for the AHL’s playoff primer.
Head coach and Bay Area native Roy Sommer picked up record breaking win #637 in the 4-2 win over the Ontario Reign at SAP Center on Feb 10. The SJ Sharks honored coach Sommer with a pregame ceremony before the Sharks and Coyotes game on Feb 13 – watch the ceremony HERE. Roy currently has 647 wins in the AHL.
The Barracuda added San Jose Sharks draft pick Alex Schoenborn (72nd overall by Sharks in 2014) to an ATO on March 31 and Alex made his professional debut for the Barracuda in the 4-2 loss in Bakersfield on April 1. Schoenborn picked up 57 points (27-30-57) in 67 games for the Portland Winterhawks this season. After appearing in one game for the Barracuda, Schoenborn then joined the Allen Americans on April 5. In addition, Nikita Jevpalovs was reassigned to the Allen Americans on March 31 and recorded three assists (0-3-3) in two games for Allen before returning to the Barracuda on April 5.
Highlights on the ice last week included forward Ryan Carpenter raking up points in all three games (1-3-4). Petter Emanuelsson scored twice while Nikolay Goldobin, Bryan Lerg, and Barclay Goodrow all scored their 18th goals of the season – which is a team high for the Barracuda. Aaron Dell made 35 saves on March 30 in the win over the Reign while defenseman Gus Young (0-2-2) and Joakim Ryan (0-3-3) shined on the blue line last week. In addition, forward Alex Gallant picked up his team leading 13th fighting major vs. Brian McGrattan on Apr 2 at San Diego.
