Dec 28, 2015

San Jose, CA –The San Jose Barracuda (11-10-2-3, 27pts) presented by Barracuda Networks had their four game point streak snapped in a 4-1 loss to the visiting Charlotte Checkers (17-11-1-0, 35pts) in front of 3,471 fans at the SAP Center on Monday afternoon.  The Barracuda continue their four game home stand on Wednesday, Dec 30 at 1:15pm vs. the Charlotte Checkers.

The Barracuda had a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes until the Checkers came from behind and scored four unanswered goals in the third period.  Micheal Haley (1-0-1) scored a second period power play goal while Aaron Dell made 31 saves in the loss for San Jose.  Justin Shugg (1-1-2), David Wohlberg (1-1-2), Ethan Werek (1-0-1), and Zach Boychuk (1-0-1) all scored in the win for the Checkers as goaltender Daniel Altshuller (4-0-0) got his fourth win of the season saving 20 out of the 21 shots he faced.

A fast paced first period yielded many scoring opportunities but no goals.  Both goaltenders saved all shots that came their way to keep the score at 0-0.  Each team received one minor penalty and shots were 12 to 6 in favor of Charlotte heading into the first intermission.

Micheal Haley (6th) lit the lamp at 6:28 on the power play skating up the right boards on the rush, deking towards the net and flicking a short side top shelf wrister over Altshuller’s glove to break the scoreless tie.  Aaron Dell made a spectacular blocker save sliding left to right on a 2 vs 1 one-timer opportunity for the Checkers at 16:10 to maintain the lead.  The Barracuda went into the locker room with the 1-0 lead despite the Checkers shot advantage of 11 to 4 in the second period.

The Checkers broke through the Barracuda defense and dominated the scoreboard in the third period.  The Checkers tied the game up on the power play at 3:36 thanks to Justin Shugg (5th) who ripped a blazing wrister from the left circle that beat Dell top shelf over his glove.  David Wohlberg (5th) scored the go ahead goal for the Checkers shorthanded at 7:35 after his teammate picked the defenseman’s pocket behind the net on the fore-check, passed it to the crease and poked it through Dells legs on his third attempt.  Ethan Werek (1st) gave the Checkers the 3 -1 lead scoring his first goal of the season on a second chance rebound on a 3 vs 1 opportunity.   Zach Boychuck (3rd) scored the empty net goal at 17:27 to put the final nail in the coffin.  Shots were 12 to 11 in favor of the Checkers in the third period.
